Syed Muhammad Amjad joined Pakistan Army in 1965 and retired in 2002. In 1999 was tasked with organizing a Defence Exhibition in Pakistan. Along with a team of dedicated officers helped organize the first exhibition which is known as IDEAS (International Defence Exhibition And Seminar).
Post retirement was appointed Managing Director Fauji Foundation. In that capacity chaired the Board of Directors of many companies of the Fauji Group inclusive of Fauji Fertilizer Co Ltd, Fauji Fertilizer Bin Qasim Ltd, Fauji Cement Co Ltd, Mari Gas. Established Foundation Securities (brokerage house & investment advisors) and Foundation University.
Retired from FF in December 2005. In 2006 was a member of The Management Advisory Board of Jahangir Sddiqui's Private Equity Fund 1 for a year before becoming Managing Director of Karachi Electric Supply Co in April 2007. Retired from there in August 2008
